Discovery Isn’t a Call You Make Once. It’s a Skill You Never Stop Using.
Most reps treat discovery as stage one: a box to check before the demo starts. The best ones never stop asking, all the way to signature.
Why most discovery questions earn lazy answers
Most reps ask generic, checklist questions because their enablement trained them to hit a required list of qualifiers, not because it is the best way to actually learn anything.
Great questions earn thoughtful answers. Average questions earn average ones.
Discovery across the whole cycle, not just the first call
- First Call: come with a point of view, held loosely, and let the prospect confirm or correct it.
- Second Call: recap what was learned, do not re-interrogate from scratch.
- During the Demo: never stop asking. Follow every answer with one more question before moving on.
- Late Stage: name the risk out loud instead of avoiding it.
